CURTIN LIBRARY ILLUMINATES

Inspiring connection, exploration, discovery and the creation of new knowledge

This real-time visualisation tells the story of how our community is using the Library’s collection as it is happening!

Whenever someone looks at an item on our online catalogue – a journal article, book, video or anything – this is represented by a coloured tile that flies in and lands on the Study Area it relates to. You can see a live count of catalogue interactions by Study Area, along with the total number of items viewed throughout the day. These patterns reveal the dynamic relationship between the Library and research at individual, study area and university levels.

Library items are mapped to 12 study areas and items that aren’t easily mapped to one of these areas is added to the central tile.

This project highlights the diversity of interests, materials, and rhythms of use across our community — making research activity visible, discoverable, and shared.

No matter where you are — on campus, in regional WA, or across the world — we value your connection to the Library.

This project is a collaboration between Curtin University Library and Unstacked.

Unstacked is a real-time visualisation of items from the Library collection being accessed by the Curtin community each day.

When someone clicks on an item in the Library’s online catalogue, this display updates by counting every view and showing which faculty the item relates to.
